Most people suffer from some type of gum disease. This can range from occasional bleeding to chronic bone loss, which can lead ultimately to tooth loss. In most cases however, gum health can be controlled.
‘Gum disease’ is the term used to describe inflammation of the gums. It may present as swollen, red gums or bleeding when brushing. Gum disease is reversible if treated. However, if left untreated it can develop into further problems potentially leading to pain, mobile teeth, and tooth loss.
Two main factors increase the risk of gum disease: smoking and poor oral hygiene. Oral hygiene is essential to remove plaque which harbours gum damaging bacteria. Oral hygiene includes effectively brushing your teeth and gums twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, and either flossing or using interdental brushes.
Research has proven the benefit of using an electric toothbrush over a manual toothbrush. The action of an electric toothbrush is up to two times more effective at removing plaque. It can be daunting to know which the right toothbrush or interdental aid is to buy, and how to use it. Please ask us at Belhaven for advice on which we would recommend for your specific needs
Your dentist will work out the appropriate cleaning routine and will give instructions to improve day-to-day maintenance. Often the scale and polish can be completed with your routine examination or as part of a course of treatment. Some patients may require more intensive cleaning every 3 months.
We are also pleased to now offer the services of a hygiene therapist. Therapists have a special interest in periodontal treatment ranging from simple scaling to the management of severe gum disease.
Cleaning Your Teeth
Toothbrushes alone can’t reach all the areas where food collects – if these areas between teeth aren’t cleaned this can lead to tooth decay, gum disease and bad breath…..
The Good News is there are products to help-
Dental Tape
Thinner than floss so great to remove food between teeth which are tightly packed
Flossers
These come in packs where the floss is attached to a small handle making the floss easier to handle. Makes it easier to reach the back teeth than using regular floss.
Superfloss
This is special floss designed for patients who have bridgework. Your dentist/hygienist will show you how to use it.
Interdental Brushes
These are small brushes designed to fit between your teeth. They are excellent for cleaning between teeth which have gaps between them. It is important to use the correct size, your hygienist will give you advice on the correct size to use.
Our Hygienist Pamela and Therapists Katrina and Caroline are here to help advise you on the best method to clean your teeth thoroughly for a healthy happy smile.
